Time Warner Cable Ups iPad App Content

8 Apr, 2011 By: Erik Gruenwedel

Cable operator adds seven channels despite ongoing litigation

The nation’s No. 2 cable TV operator added seven channels to its iPad app, hours after filing litigation against Viacom Inc. in a burgeoning dispute over carriage rights and the Internet.

Additions of Oxygen, Lifetime, History International, Biography, History en Espanol, Crime and Investigation Network, and Reelz bring to 50 channels offered on app that allows TWC subscribers free 24/7 access to live and archived content on myriad devices inside the home.

With Comcast and Cablevision bowing similar apps, content owners have become increasingly concerned unfettered access to proprietary content via the Internet circumvents existing syndication and third-party license deals, among other issues.

“We are pleased to be expanding the channel lineup for the more than 360,000 customers who have downloaded our app by adding quality programming from partners who understand the importance of meeting our customers’, and their viewers’, desire to watch the content they pay for on any screen in their home,” said Rob Marcus, president and COO of Time Warner Cable in a statement.
