Report: CNN Looking for Digital Deals

20 Dec, 2011 By: Chris Tribbey

Aiming to make up ground on rivals MSNBC and Fox News, Time Warner’s CNN is looking at acquisitions in the digital space, according to a Bloomberg interview with CNN president Jim Walton.

“As more tablets are sold and smartphones, it’s only going to continue to grow,” Walton told the news service. “If it helps us in that goal, we’ll be looking [at digital deals]. I wouldn’t rule anything out, but our focus is on digital.”

Digital acquisitions that could help draw more tablet and mobile readers are a priority for CNN, Walton told Bloomberg, especially with a slowdown in pay-TV subscribers. CNN is aiming to bundle its digital and TV audiences in one package to audiences, according to the report.

CNN acquired the iPad digital magazine application Zite in August and already offers its programming online to cable subscribers and on Apple products.
