Gaiam Vivendi Extends Discovery License Deal13 Aug, 2012 By: Erik Gruenwedel
Gaiam Vivendi Entertainment has extended its home entertainment license agreement with Discovery Communications.
Under terms of the multiyear agreement first announced last month, Gaiam Vivendi will continue to release programming on disc and digital from Discovery Communications’ networks, including Discovery Channel, TLC, Animal Planet, Investigation Discovery, Science and Military Channel.
Vivendi Entertainment’s Discovery License agreement is one of the reasons Gaiam in April acquired it from Universal Music Group for $13.5 million. Other Vivendi content partners include WWE, Classic Media, RHI Entertainment, National Geographic, Shout! Factory, Nassar Entertainment Group and NFL Productions, among others.
Gaiam Vivendi will distribute an array of Discovery programming, including tentpole episodic programs such as “Deadliest Catch” and special event programming such as “North America,” which premieres in 2013.
Gaiam Vivendi said it would continue to develop ways to utilize the Discovery library through a variety of strategies, including promotional catalog opportunities, unique configurations and special collector’s box set editions.
The distributor of lifestyle and fitness entertainment will leverage the value of Discovery’s content library across its distribution network, which includes more than 60,000 retailers and approximately 15,000 store-within-stores in order to generate maximum exposure with consumers.
“Reflecting the success we've achieved over the past three years distributing Discovery's titles to mass market retail chains and non-traditional media outlets, we are confident this partnership will remain strong and Discovery will build on its significant industry presence,” said Bill Sondheim, president of Gaiam Vivendi Entertainment.
