Gaiam Vivendi Entertainment Extends ‘Discovery’ Agreement

Gaiam Vivendi Entertainment July 26 said it has extended its home video distribution agreement with Discovery Communications, including DVD and Blu-ray Disc releases for select Discovery Channel, TLC, Animal Planet, Investigation Discovery, Science and Military Channel programs.

Gaiam Vivendi Entertainment said the deal initially includes tentpole episodic programs such as Discovery Channel’s “Deadliest Catch,” and special event programming such as “North America,” premiering in 2013. 

GVE said it will seek “creative ways” to exploit the Discovery library at retail through a variety of strategies, including promotional catalog opportunities, unique configurations and special collector’s editions.

“Due to the success we have had over the past three years distributing Discovery’s titles to both mass market retail chains and non-traditional media outlets, we are confident this partnership will remain strong and Discovery will continue to have a significant presence in the industry,” Bill Sondheim, president of Gaiam Vivendi Entertainment, said in a statement.

The distribution extension follows the April closure of Gaiam’s $13.5 million acquisition of Vivendi Entertainment, which has content partners that include WWE, Classic Media, RHI Entertainment, National Geographic, Shout Factory, Nassar Entertainment Group and NFL Productions, among others.
