Cablevision, DirecTV Lose Video Subs

Pay-TV subscriber attrition due to economic and technological changes continues as both Cablevision and DirecTV reported third-quarter (ended Sept. 30) video subscriber losses.

New York-based Cablevision lost 116,000 video subs to end the period with 2.7 million subs, compared with a base of more than 2.8 million subs during the prior-year period.

Through the first three quarters of the year, Cablevision has lost a combined 302,000 video subscribers, with subscriber losses increasing incrementally through the year.

Meanwhile, DirecTV, which is awaiting regulatory approval of its $48.5 billion merger with AT&T,  lost 28,000 video subscribers. The No. 1 satellite TV operator gained 139,000 video subs during the same period last year.

Through the first three quarters, DirecTV has lost 50,000 video subs to end the period with 20.2 million subscribers.
