AMC Networks, Comcast to Boost Pay-TV With 'DVD Extras'

In an over-the-top video world, traditional pay-TV is fighting back as Comcast Cable and AMC Networks announced an upgrade option giving Xfinity TV subs access to enhanced content — for a fee.

Specifically, subs paying an additional $4.99 monthly have access to AMC Premiere, an ad-free platform showcasing movies, bonus material, special features and programing related to network programing such as "The Walking Dead." The type of content often included with DVD and Blu-ray Disc.

And in a market where streaming services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Hulu siphon away customers, pay-TV operators are innovating.

“Developing more options for viewers to connect with our content is a priority,” said Charlie Collier, president of AMC, SundanceTV and AMC Studios.

Collier said partnering with the nation’s largest cabler brings AMC Premiere to a wider sub base to “build deeper relationships with fan communities across all of our programming and platforms.”

In addition to ad-free versions of stacked current seasons of original series available in real-time, AMC Premiere will be updated with enhancements like original content, a curated and continually refreshed slate of movies specifically chosen to complement current in-season programming, some prior seasons of original series, first looks at series teasers and trailers, uncut and bonus scenes and episodes, exclusive interviews with casts and showrunners, and more.

“We are always looking for new content and innovative experiences to offer our [pay-TV] customers,” said Matt Strauss, EVP and GM of video and entertainment services at Comcast.

Xfinity TV customers can access AMC Premiere through Xfinity set-top boxes and the Xfinity Stream website and mobile app. Availability on AMC apps and AMC.com will roll out over the coming months.
