It’s easy to question the effectiveness of re-editing an adult film for an ‘R’ rating. Strip out the porn and more often than not you’re left with a cheesy story and bad acting. Then again, in certain circles those are the elements some fans appreciate the most about adult cinema.

The “Pirates” movies strive to be something more. The first movie, made in 2005, reportedly cost more than $1 million, at the time the most expensive adult film ever. Its enormous success within its industry meant a sequel was inevitable, and IMDb lists the budget of Stagnetti’s Revenge at $8 million. An attempt to recoup some of that money through a mainstream release is understandable.

Stagnetti’s Revenge jettisoned nearly 45 minutes of hardcore material to earn MPAA approval, clocking in at about 92 minutes.

The movies are basically overblown rip-offs of “Pirates of the Caribbean,” and while the edited versions may be intentionally lacking in sex appeal, they are not without a certain goofy charm. The second “Pirates” is probably a better movie than the first, filled with tongue-in-cheek dialogue and over-the-top swashbuckling, led by a bravura performance from Evan Stone.

As an attempt at mainstream cinema, Stagnetti’s Revenge is about on par with an ambitious indie, filled with polished CGI effects typical of a good fantasy video game. That at least puts it a notch above most late-night-cable guilty pleasures, and anyone who enjoyed the watered-down version of the first film will probably have fun with this one too.

The Blu-ray includes a few deleted scenes, bloopers and some behind-the-scenes featurettes. Highlights are a rundown of how visual effects transformed certain greenscreened scenes, and Stone doing a “Star Trek” parody as a pirate-hunting captain with a communicator.
