Star Trek: The Original Series — Season Three
Paramount Home Entertainment and CBS’ Dec. 15 Blu-ray Disc release of Star Trek: The Original Series — Season Three will include a special treat for fans — a long-lost alternate version of the pilot episode.
The six-disc set ($118.99) will include all 24 remastered episodes from the 1968-69 season of the landmark sci-fi series, presented with both original and upgraded visual effects, plus most of the original DVD bonus material, including the remastered version of the original pilot, “The Cage.”
As an added bonus, the set will include the original cut of the second pilot, “Where No Man Has Gone Before,” the first episode to feature James T. Kirk. The episode was commissioned by NBC after the network rejected “The Cage” as “too cerebral.” This unseen version from 1965 includes footage not shown in the broadcast version, offers a different opening monologue and music, and is presented in three parts with 1970s-style act breaks.
This version is believed to be what was screened for NBC, and thus the basis for the decision to broadcast “Star Trek.”
