Technicolor Launches Second-screen Blu-ray App29 Nov, 2011 By: Chris Tribbey
The Weinstein Co.’s The King’s Speech is the first Blu-ray Disc title to carry Technicolor’s MediaEcho application, a second-screen app that synchronizes Blu-ray content to tablet devices.
Using BD Live, MediaEcho allows the film to play on the main screen while playing bonus content — including commentaries, movie and historical trivia, behind-the-scenes data, IMDb info and social media applications — on the tablet.
“The key benefit of MediaEcho as a second-screen application is to offer consumers content that is synchronized and relevant to what they are watching on the TV screen,” said Lew Rothman, EVP of operations and chief technology officer for The Weinstein Co. “We are excited about the new level of interactivity and the second-screen experience and are confident that consumers will value this app and want to watch content in this way moving forward.”
The application is available for free via the Apple iTunes store, and Rothman suggested more Weinstein titles would carry the feature in the future.
“MediaEcho significantly increases the value of the Blu-ray Disc format by delivering immersive and social experiences to home entertainment fans,” said Lanny Raimondo, head of Technicolor’s Entertainment Services businesses.
