Report: Half-Year Blu-ray Movie Sales Up 107% in Europe/Japan14 Jul, 2010 By: Erik Gruenwedel
Despite a worldwide slowdown in sales of packaged media, Blu-ray Disc movies continued to gain in popularity with point-of-sale data in Western Europe and Japan indicating a 107% increase in unit sales during the first six months of 2010, according to a new report.
German-based research firm Media Control GfK International said overall disc sales (DVD/Blu-ray) in Western Europe/Japan was essentially flat, falling 1.2% compared to the same period last year.
“The major retail markets for DVD and Blu-ray sales in Western Europe and Japan are showing positive signs of stabilization due to improving declines in DVD sales and growing consumer adoption of the Blu-ray format,” said Brad Hackley, president of Media Control GfK USA in Los Angeles.
First Half 2010 sales data of DVD/Blu-ray movies and digital media, including video-on-demand (VOD), in the United States are expected this month from DEG: The Digital Entertainment Group.
