NPD: Blu-ray Household Penetration Nearly Doubles

Deep discounting on Blu-ray Disc players during the 2009 holiday season helped push American Blu-ray household penetration to 11%, up from 6% in 2009, according to an April survey conducted by The NPD Group.
Flat-panel household penetration was up 3% to 64%, helping to push consumer adoption of high-def, NPD said.
“Consumers are flocking to products that offer slim profiles and access to digital content,” said Ross Rubin, executive director of industry analysis for NPD. “Devices such as Blu-ray players, netbooks and e-readers are being used to enable rich, connected experiences.”
Rubin said Blu-ray player prices were on average $175 in March of this year, down from $277 in March 2009. “There have been other factors that have helped, though, such as rising HDTV penetration and more available content,” he said.
Netbook penetration doubled to 8%, and e-readers are in 5% of households, NPD’s research found.
