A survey translated from Japanese by AnimeNewsNetwork.com found that 2009 home video sales in Japan were $3.04 billion, an increase of 6.4% from 2008.
Blu-ray Disc accounted for $258.9 million of the sales, or 9.4%. The data, from corporate holding group Oricon, was gathered from more than 25,000 retail and Internet stores. More than 50.5 million DVDs were sold in the country, with nearly 3.4 million Blu-rays sold.
Anime and action titles accounted for nearly 60% of the home video titles sold. Japanese distributor Bandai Visual had the largest market share with 5.4%, with Warner Home Video second at 5%.
