German Q1 Blu-ray Disc Sales Up 400%14 May, 2009 By: Erik Gruenwedel
First quarter sales of Blu-ray movies in Germany topped 1.1 million units, up more than 400% from the same period last year, according to the German Federal Association for Audiovisual Media.
Indeed, consumers have already bought two-thirds of the entire 2008 German BD disc unit sales due in part to average title retail prices falling 27% to $27.75 from nearly $38.
BD revenues totaled $31.4 million, compared to $8.1 million last year. DVD sales fell 5.4%, to $382 million from $404 million.
“For the home entertainment industry, the biggest period is by far the fourth quarter, we can expect nine-figure sales revenues, despite aggressive pricing by retailers," said spokesperson Oliver Trettin.
