Cos. to Turn BD Players Into Network Devices

24 Sep, 2009 By: Chris Tribbey

As early as this holiday season, Internet-connected Blu-ray Disc players could be multipurpose, networked set-tops, thanks to a new software solution from Related Content Database (RCDb) and Videon Central.

The software package the companies have created will be made available to Blu-ray player manufacturers and would enable Blu-ray players to load applications and connect with third-party services and content. In other words, content owners could potentially offer their product directly through the players and consumers could download applications to facilitate the process, instead of relying solely on embedded offerings.

“We know consumers are looking for convenient, instant gratification. They like the promise of the Internet,” said RCDb CEO Zane Vella. “We’re looking to help consumer electronics manufacturers make Blu-ray players the best audio and video available and the gateway to all things digital.”

“This is not a replacement for BD Live,” he added. “What we’re doing is making it possible for studios to make Java-based content available directly to the consumer via the player. Our joint solution with Videon Central gives studios another path to the living room and a direct connection to their audience.”

Videon Central CEO Todd Erdley added, “The partnership with RCDb enables seamless access to Internet-delivered services and content for the consumer and in turn allows the manufacturer to build best-of-breed, high-value, differentiated products.”
