TiVo Bows Blockbuster On Demand Movies

13 Oct, 2009 By: Erik Gruenwedel

TiVo Oct. 13 began offering broadband subscribers access to new release movie rentals through the Blockbuster On Demand streaming service.

Dallas-based Blockbuster and digital video recording pioneer TiVo in March said they had partnered to rent and sell movies and TV shows electronically.

TiVo users will have access to 10,000 Blockbuster digital titles as a progressive download via the DVR set-top box. Rentals are priced from $2.99 each and purchases start at $14.99 each. Some of the available titles include Away We Go, Ghosts of Girlfriends Past and Observe and Report.

Blockbuster On Demand is available to owners of the TiVo Series 2 and 3, TiVo HD and TiVo HD XL DVR models.

The TiVo broadband-enabled DVRs also will be available at Blockbuster corporate stores.

Integration of Blockbuster On Demand (formerly Movielink) into TiVo devices is another effort by the No. 1 DVD rental service to compete with Netflix in the digital rental market. Netflix offers about 12,000 streaming titles as a value-add to subscribers.

TiVo also offers Netflix streaming to its subscribers.

“By bringing Blockbuster's content direct to TiVo subscribers, we show once again that TiVo offers much more choice and convenience for our customers compared to other DVR offerings,” said Joe Miller, SVP of sales and marketing at TiVo. “We are very pleased to say … that together both companies have succeeded in bringing even more entertainment direct to the living room."
