New Onkyo Blu-ray Player Includes Blockbuster VOD Movies

Blockbuster Inc. Aug. 31 said it signed a deal with Onkyo to include its Blockbuster On Demand transactional movie download service in the consumer electronics manufacturer’s new Blu-ray Disc player due in September.

Onkyo’s BD-SP808 player, which is the 85th CE device to incorporate Blockbuster On Demand, allows customers to browse and select certain movies as soon as the titles are available on DVD and Blu-ray without having to pay a monthly subscription fee. Using the system's search tool, consumers can also view ratings, trailers and other information about each movie.

Hollywood studios are aggressively licensing transactional VOD deals with third party aggregators, including cable and satellite operators, in an effort to mitigate softening package media sales.

“Combining Blockbuster On Demand with Onkyo's sophisticated Blu-ray technology, users will discover a convenient way to enhance their in-home movie watching experience,” said Bruce Anderson, Blockbuster On Demand's SVP and GM.

Dallas-based Blockbuster, which reportedly plans to enter into a pre-packaged bankruptcy in the coming weeks, is attempting to update its brand through the roll out of a multiplatform distribution strategy that includes delivering movie rentals and sellthrough via Blockbuster Express kiosks, VOD, by mail, mobile phones and a reduced geographical footprint of traditional retail stores.
