NCR Signs Xtra Mart Convenience Chain4 May, 2010 By: Erik Gruenwedel
NCR Corp., which is financing the deployment of 10,000 Blockbuster Express DVD rental kiosks through a license agreement, May 4 said it signed a distribution deal with Xtra Mart.
Under terms of the agreement, NCR will install Express kiosks in 80 Xtra Mart locations beginning this month.
“Xtra Mart is constantly striving to provide premium services and products to our customers,” said Robert Sanft, category manager at Xtra Mart. “Installing DVD kiosks outside our stores accomplishes just that.”
Xtra Mart has 150 gas/convenience stores throughout Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, Pennsylvania and Maryland.
With DVD kiosk vending approaching 30% of the packaged media rental market, competition for new and established kiosk real estate is heating up.
Redbox last week disclosed that it had displaced Blockbuster Express at select Schnucks locations in the Midwest.
A NCR representative said Blockbuster Express kiosks this week will replace Redbox units at Sheetz and Speedway convenience stores in the Northeast.
In fact, the rep said Express kiosks had displaced Redbox units in seven out of eight retail spots that came open recently for negotiations.
