NCR to Deploy Blockbuster Express Kiosks in Texas19 Jan, 2010 By: Erik Gruenwedel
NCR Corp. Jan. 19 said it would install in the first quarter Blockbuster Express branded rental kiosks in more than 150 Brookshire Grocery stores located in Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas and Mississippi.
Duluth, Ga.-based NCR has a license deal with Dallas-based Blockbuster to rollout 10,000 branded Express kiosks in the U.S. in 2010. The company, which recently acquired DVDPlay kiosks and owns The New Release brand, operates about 4,000 converted Express kiosks throughout North America.
"We considered many of the leading kiosk providers and were most impressed by NCR's rapid growth in the space," said Brookshire spokesperson Don Gaynier.
NCR, which recently expanded Express locations is Manhattan, N.Y., began installing Blockbuster kiosks in Brookshire stores last year and ended 2009 with about 100 units in service.
The company remains in a race for market penetration with leader Redbox, which operates about 22,000 kiosks.
NCR, which earlier this month bowed an MP3 kiosk with MOD Systems, said it could incorporate SD card compatibility and USB ports in Express kiosks when the market for movie download vending evolves.
