Dish Bows Facebook App for Blockbuster Movie Pass

Dish Network Corp. has launched an application on Facebook that allows users to view scenes from its new “Celebration” television ad for Blockbuster Movie Pass.

Movie Pass is the $10 monthly addendum launched Oct. 1 for new Dish satellite TV subscribers that gives users access to 100,000 movies and TV shows by mail, in-store and streaming.

The Facebook app allows friends to view outtakes from the ad, which features a man telling family and friends about the Dish offer. Shortly thereafter, his dog, Archie, family and mailman start dancing to soul singer Eli Reed’s “Explosion.” The app allows users to watch 12 specific scenes with characters in the ad, including Archie doing four backflips.

Englewood, Colo.-based Dish acquired Blockbuster in April in a bankruptcy auction and is using the brand (and more than 1,500 Blockbuster stores) to promote its satellite-based multichannel video distribution platform.

Dish also recently bowed Blockbuster Movie Combo, a subscription-based program that allows members to rent one DVD, Blu-ray or video game out at a time from stores for $14.99 a month. The program also allows one by-mail rental per month. Since launching the program has signed up more than 600,000 members.
