Blockbuster Selling $100 Blu-ray Player

31 May, 2010 By: Erik Gruenwedel

Blockbuster kicked off summer over the Memorial Day weekend offering the Sylvania NB501SL9 Blu-ray Disc player for $99.99 in stores nationwide.

Pricing for the profile 1.1 (non-Internet) model puts Dallas-based Blockbuster in line with other store-based and online retailers selling similar-priced players.

With the consumer electronics industry and studios increasing emphasis on digital distribution through Web-enabled Blu-ray players, a surplus of previous models exists. In addition it signals Blockbuster’s willingness to match retail competitors on price and ongoing efforts to mainstream high-definition packaged media.

Blockbuster also sells Blu-ray players from Sony and Samsung.

With an original suggested retail price (SRP) of $249, the Sylvania player is available at Amazon and Walmart for $99.95 and $98, respectively.

Finally, Blockbuster is selling the TiVo Series 2 digital video recorder with Blockbuster On Demand movies for $99.99 -- $50 off SRP.
