Blockbuster On Demand in Philips Blu-ray Players6 Jul, 2010 By: Erik Gruenwedel
Blockbuster July 6 said its transactional video-on-demand (VOD) service, Blockbuster On Demand, is now included in the latest Internet-enabled Blu-ray Disc players from Philips.
Dallas-based Blockbuster is attempting to recapitalize and eliminate more than $900 million in debt so it can reinvent itself as a multiplatform distributor of home entertainment via kiosk, VOD, by-mail, mobile phone and cable, in addition to shrinking its store base.
Indeed, it is Blockbuster’s brand and push to drive higher-margin transactional VOD and packaged media sellthrough, that affords the rental icon continued support from the major studios. Blockbuster On Demand provides on-screen search and browsing capabilities, as well as full details, ratings, trailers, and related information about each movie directly on the television.
“Philips Blu-ray players, combined with Blockbuster On Demand, offer consumers a one-of-a-kind home theatre experience with the added convenience of not having to run out to rent a movie," said Todd Richardson, SVP of sales and marketing for P&F, exclusive licensee for Philips consumer televisions and home theater in North America.
Blockbuster shares, which generated more than 17 million sales July 2 after the company disclosed shareholders had not approved a reverse stock split, among other actions, were down in mid-morning trading.
