Blockbuster to Hire 4,000 Holiday Workers29 Oct, 2010 By: Erik Gruenwedel
Bankrupt Blockbuster Inc. Oct. 29 said it plans to hire 4,000 seasonal employees to help boost retail and rental sales during the holidays.
Dallas-based Blockbuster, which filed a pre-packaged bankruptcy claim in September, said the new employees would be selected based on their knowledge of movies, including specific genres, according to Craig Mabrey, director of recruiting for Blockbuster.
A bankruptcy judge Oct. 27 approved $125 million in senior lender funding allowing Blockbuster to pay pre-petition claims by the studios and also approved hiring a chief restructuring officer and maintaining operations, including staff hiring.
“We know the holiday season is our busiest and we plan to hire thousands of new employees in preparation for another busy shopping season in our stores,” Mabrey said.
Blockbuster typically employs about 25,500 people nationwide during non-holiday periods.
