Best Buy Ups CinemaNow ‘Legacy’

The retailer is giving consumers early digital access (including UltraViolet) to ‘The Bourne Legacy,’ ‘Ted’ and ‘Ice Age: Continental Drift,’ among other movies, via CinemaNow


Best Buy Co. Dec. 2 began offering early digital access to Universal Studios Home Entertainment’s The Bourne Legacy with the online or in-store pre-order of the Blu-ray combo pack, which includes an exclusive bonus disc featuring 30 minutes of additional material.

Best Buy is distributing the digital copy of Legacy and bonus material via CinemaNow, its transactional video-on-demand and electronic sellthrough platform. CinemaNow is Best Buy's link to UltraViolet, the studio-backed initiative aimed at jumpstarting packaged media and digital sellthrough through cloud-based storage.

Indeed, Legacy represents the Minneapolis, Minn.-based consumer electronics retailer’s first major UltraViolet release, following the soft launch of Sony Pictures Home Entertainment’s The Lucky One with UV on Aug. 28.

“Best Buy’s UltraViolet launch is another important milestone for UltraViolet," said Mark Teitell, general manager with UltraViolet (DECE). "Via Best Buy’s stores, websites and CinemaNow apps, UltraViolet is gaining substantial additional consumer awareness and accessibility to TV, computing and tablet/smartphone screens. With this heritage, we’re particularly pleased to now welcome Best Buy to the growing group of companies that have deployed UltraViolet offerings into the marketplace.”

CinemaNow is also offering early digital (and UV) access to ‘R’-rated comedy Ted, starring Mark Wahlberg, and 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment’s Ice Age: Continental Drift, according to its website. The titles street Dec. 11 on packaged media, electronic sellthrough and transactional VOD.

It appears Sony Pictures’ Total Recall, which streets Dec. 18, could be available early via CinemaNow beginning Dec. 9. Also available digitally in UV is Men in Black 3, which hit retail Nov. 30.

Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes last month reiterated support for Warner Bros. Home Entertainment and other studios making early availability on electronic sellthrough (and UV) of select titles prior to packaged media.

Legacy, which stars Jeremy Renner in a reboot of the Jason Bourne action films featuring Matt Damon, streets Dec. 11. It is available as a two-disc Blu-ray combo pack ($34.98) with a DVD, digital copy and UltraViolet, and as a $29.98 stand-alone DVD. It grossed $275 million at the global box office, including $113 million domestically.

Best Buy is embracing e-commerce with price matching and second-day shipping through the holidays — a strategy that incorporates CinemaNow and packaged media. Last month, Best Buy rolled out via CinemaNow early access to an exclusive documentary with the Warner Home Video pre-order The Dark Knight Rises Blu-ray combo pack, which streets Dec. 4.

Separately, Best Buy shares opened up slightly with news that founder and former chairman Robert Schulze's bid to take the retailer private is progressing.
