Best Buy Bows 'Monster' Blu-ray Deal27 Sep, 2009 By: Erik Gruenwedel
Best Buy is offering Paramount/DreamWorks Animation’s Monsters vs. Aliens on Blu-ray Disc for $4.99 with the purchase of an Insignia Profile 2.0 Blu-ray player for $149.99 — just $20 more than what the player retailed for last year the day after Thanksgiving on the retail “holiday” dubbed Black Friday.
A worldwide box office hit, Monsters vs. Aliens generated nearly $380 million globally and is considered one of the biggest fourth-quarter home entertainment releases. The title is featured prominently in this week's newspaper circulars for Best Buy, Target and other national retailers.
The movie streets Sept. 29 on Blu-ray Disc ($25.99) and standard DVD ($15.99).
Best Buy's proprietary Chinese-made Insignia Blu-ray player regularly sells for $179.99 and features BD-Live capability in addition to access to Netflix movie streams (separate subscription required).
The Minneapolis-based No. 1 consumer electronics and Blu-ray Disc retailer sells seven BD player models, including a wireless Insignia BD player for $249.99.
Other specials include a wireless BD player from Sony for $299.99 (regularly $349.99), and a Panasonic Profile 2.0 BD player for $199.99 ($249.99).
Industry scuttlebutt suggests Blu-ray player retail prices could fall to around $100 on Black Friday this year.
Indeed, Wal-Mart has been selling Profile 1.1 (no Internet connection) Magnavox players at $98, and Southern California-based Fry's Electronics is selling refurbished Samsung Profile 1.1 BD players for $119.
