Best Buy to Bow Midnight Releases of Transformers II13 Oct, 2009 By: Erik Gruenwedel
Best Buy Co. will open at midnight at select stores nationwide for the Oct. 20 DVD/Blu-ray Disc sales launch of the No. 1 2009 box office release Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, from Paramount Home Entertainment.
The Minneapolis-based consumer electronics retailer is joining other retailers, including Hastings Entertainment, Trans World Entertainment’s f.y.e. retail chain, Target and Wal-Mart in making the $402 million movie (another $431 million internationally) starring Shia LaBeouf and Megan Fox the key packaged-media release for the fourth quarter.
Spokesperson Erin Bix confirmed that about 110 Best Buy stores across the country would reopen Oct. 19 prior to midnight offering special discounts and related swag with the DVD/Blu-ray releases.
“We let our stores opt in [for midnight openings] for various new releases,” Bix said. “[The last one] might have been X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which wasn’t that long ago.”
An online report says Best Buy will discount Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen disc sales from $2 (DVD) to $3 (Blu-ray) to early bird shoppers. The title is currently available for pre-order online at BestBuy.com for $16.99 for widescreen dubbed subtitle DVD (regularly $29.98); $22.99 widescreen DVD ($34.98); $24.99 Blu-ray Disc ($39.99); and $46.99 Blu-ray Disc gift set ($49.99).
Bix said Best Buy regularly opens select stores at midnight for major video game releases.
“So it is not so out of the norm for us,” she said.
Interestingly, Bix said Best Buy did not participate earlier this year in midnight launch parties for the hit teen vampire film Twilight, which sold 3 million units in first-day (March 21) sales and continues to be the top-selling packaged-media release of the year from Summit Home Entertainment.
