Netflix Closing in on HBO as Top Emmy Network

13 Jul, 2017 By: John Latchem

Not airing a new “Game of Thrones” season within the eligibility period was no hurdle for HBO, which earned a whopping 110 Emmy nominations July 13.

However, not far behind in second place was Netflix, which scored 91.

Last year, HBO had 94 nominations and 22 wins, while Netflix had 54 nominations with nine wins.

In fact, in this year’s Outstanding Drama Series category, a majority of the seven nominees are from subscription SVOD services. In addition to three from Netflix, one came from Hulu, which has 18 nominations (up from two last year).

Netflix’s nominees include season five of “House of Cards” and the first seasons of “The Crown” and “Stranger Things.” Hulu scored with the first season of “The Handmaid’s Tale.” Other nominees include season three of AMC’s “Better Call Saul” (distributed on disc by Sony Pictures), season one of NBC’s “This Is Us” (distributed on disc by Fox), and HBO’s Westworld: Season One, due on DVD, Blu-ray and UHD BD Nov. 7.

Netflix and HBO each have two nominees for Outstanding Comedy Series, as does ABC, with FX taking one. Netflix’s nominees include season two of “Master of None” and season three of “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” (both shows are distributed on disc by Universal). HBO’s nominees in the category include season four of “Silicon Valley” and season six of “Veep,” the latter due on DVD and Blu-ray Sept. 12. ABC’s nominees are season eight of “Modern Family” (distributed on disc by Fox) and season three of “Black-ish.” FX’s first season of “Atlanta” rounds out the category.

Nominees for Outstanding Limited Series include HBO’s Big Little Lies, due on DVD and Blu-ray Aug. 1; the third volume of FX’s “Fargo” (distributed on disc by Fox); FX’s Feud: Bette and Joan; National Geographic’s Genius: Einstein (distributed on disc by Fox); and HBO’s The Night Of, available now on DVD and Blu-ray.

The 69th Annual Emmy Awards will air Sept. 17 on CBS. For a complete list of nominees, visit Emmys.com.
