13 Dec, 2012 By: John Latchem

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s nominations for the 70th annual Golden Globes included a sizeable number of movies and TV shows already available on DVD and Blu-ray.

Among the contenders for Best Motion Picture — Drama, are Argo, Django Unchained, Life of Pi, Lincoln and Zero Dark Thirty, all of which are still in theaters. However, among the nominees for Best Motion Picture — Comedy or Musical, three of the five are available on disc: Fox’s The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, Universal’s Moonrise Kingdom and Sony Pictures’ Salmon Fishing in the Yemen. The other two are Les Miserables and Silver Linings Playbook.

Best Exotic also earned a nomination for Best Actress for Judi Dench. Salmon earned additional noms for stars Emily Blunt and Ewan McGregor in the top acting categories.

Sony Pictures’ Hope Springs earned a nomination for Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical for Meryl Streep, while Millennium’s Bernie star Jack Black was nominated for Best Actor. Both films are available now on DVD and Blu-ray.

For Best Actress in a Drama, the only performance currently on disc is Rachel Weisz in The Deep Blue Sea, from Music Box Films. Among the actors, Richard Gere was nominated for Arbitrage, which Lionsgate releases on DVD and Blu-ray Dec. 21.

Fox’s The Sessions, slated for release Feb. 12, was nominated for Best Actor in a Drama for John Hawkes and Best Supporting Actress for Helen Hunt.

Best Animated Feature Film nominees include Disney’s Brave (already on disc) and Frankenweenie (on DVD and Blu-ray Jan. 8), Sony Pictures’ Hotel Transylvania (on DVD and Blu-ray Jan. 29) and the not-yet-announced-for-disc Wreck-It Ralph and Rise of the Guardians.

Best Original Song nominees include “For You” from Act of Valor (on disc from Fox) and “Safe & Sound” from The Hunger Games (on disc from Lionsgate).

In the television categories, Best Drama Series nominees are “Breaking Bad,” “Boardwalk Empire,” “Downton Abbey,” “Homeland” and “The Newsroom,” the latter of which is the only show without a season yet on disc.

“Homeland,” the Showtime series on DVD and Blu-ray from Fox, also earned noms for Best Actor for Damian Lewis, Best Actress for Claire Danes, and Best Supporting Actor for Mandy Patinkin.

In addition to Lewis, Best Actor in a Drama Series nominations went to Bryan Cranston for “Breaking Bad,” Steve Buscemi for “Boardwalk Empire,” Jon Hamm for “Mad Men” (Lionsgate) and Jeff Daniels for “The Newsroom.”

The other shows already have seasons on disc, including the recently released Girls: The Complete First Season from HBO.

Jim Parsons of “Big Bang Theory” and Matt LeBlanc of “Episodes” also earned noms in the Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical Series category, in addition to Alec Baldwin for “30 Rock” (Universal), Don Cheadle for “House of Lies” (season one on DVD Dec. 18 from Paramount) and Louis C.K. for “Louie” (Fox).
