EMA Honors Independents, Shatner

MARINA DEL REY, Calif. — The Entertainment Merchants Association (EMA) has honored four independent video titles with Independent Home Entertainment Awards, and has also given actor William Shatner its Video Legend award.

The honors were given during the 2013 Independent Product Market event.

“There are some truly wonderful videos that come out of independent studios and provide great entertainment to the consumer,” said EMA president and CEO Mark Fisher. “It is a pleasure to recognize these outstanding titles and give them the attention they deserve.”

2 Days in New York from Magnolia Pictures won Rental Title of the Year; Americano from MPI Home Video earned best Direct-to-Video/Limited Release Title of the Year; Masterpiece Classic: Downtown Abbey — Complete Seasons 1, 2 & 3 from PBS Distribution won Sellthrough Title of the Year; and Screen Media’s Wild Horse Wild Ride was named Documentary/Special Interest Title of the Year.

EMA retail and distributor members chose the winners.

Shatner was given the Video Legend award n recognition of his career and the popularity of his work on home video. His latest project, “The Captains Close Up,” is a five-episode miniseries that features interviews with the actors who have played “Star Trek” captains (Sir Patrick Stewart, Avery Brooks, Kate Mulgrew, Scott Bakula and Chris Pine). Entertainment One will release the show on DVD Aug. 13.

“William Shatner is one of the most-recognizable and popular stars of television and he continues to delight audiences with his diverse choices of roles,” Fisher said. “It is an honor to recognize his contribution to the medium and his enduring popularity.”
