Amazon, Best Buy, Target, 'Mad Max,' 'Star Wars' Among DEG Honorees

DEG: The Digital Entertainment Group held its annual awards reception Jan. 6 at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, recognizing excellence in home entertainment content, merchandising and promoting digital entertainment.

The DEG Creative Excellence Awards, which honor the top Blu-ray Disc and Digital HD titles of 2015, were selected by a panel of reviewers and industry reporters from trade, entertainment and daily consumer news organizations. In addition to overall sound and picture quality, all titles were considered for those features that best demonstrate the value-added nature of the formats.

Best New Release on Blu-ray went to Mad Max: Fury Road, from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment. Best Classic Reissue on Blu-ray went to Lost in Space: The Complete Adventures, from 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment. Best New Release on Digital HD went to Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, from Paramount Home Media Distribution. Best Classic Reissue on Digital HD went to Star Wars: The Digital Movie Collection, from 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment and Walt Disney Studios. Best TV on Blu-ray went to Game of Thrones: The Complete Fourth Season, from HBO Home Entertainment. Best Hi-Res Audio Download went to David Bowie: Five Years, from Warner Music Group. Best Concert Video on Blu-ray went to Rammstein: Live in Amerika, from Universal Music Group.

Top retailers and products were voted on by the DEG membership.

Best Buy earned Hardware Retailer of the Year, for its marketing and education to consumers on new home entertainment technologies.

Target was honored as Software Retailer of the Year for the second time in the past three years for its longtime commitment to physical and digital content.

Amazon received Digital Retailer of the Year accolades for its “stellar execution” in the electronic-sellthrough market.

“Our retail partners are key to engaging consumers and making their home entertainment experience complete. We thank them for all their hard work and support,” said DEG president Amy Jo Smith.

The DEG Emiel N. Petrone Innovation Awards, in memory of the trade group’s founding chairman, Emiel N. Petrone, went to LG Electronics 4K OLED TV (model #EF9500 or #EG9600) for Best 4K Ultra HDTV; Yamaha’s YSP-5600 with Dolby Atmos for Best Sound Bar; Sony Electronics 4K Upscale Blu-ray Disc Player with Super Wi-Fi — BDP-S6500 for “Best Connected Blu-ray Disc Player; and Vizo’s Reference Series — 120 for Most Innovative Home Entertainment Product.
