While the career trajectory of WWE grapplers-turned-thespians is well documented via movies starring Dwayne Johnson, Steve Austin, Hulk Hogan and John Cena, the Hollywood fortunes of MMA fighters (excluding Gina Carano in Haywire) remain in the early rounds.
Former UFC champion Randy Couture, who cut his “acting” teeth as a member of the ensemble cast of The Expendables, headlines Hijacked, playing rogue federal agent Ross on the heels of crooked business tycoon Lieb (Craig Fairbrass). Ross is also trying to reconcile with ex-girlfriend Olivia (Tiffany Dupont), who has landed a publicist job with Lieb.
Ross is asked to accompany the tycoon as security on his private jet. Unbeknownst to Ross, a separate criminal group known as “The Tribe” also is on board the voluminous plane, working with Lieb’s wife to coerce the tycoon into wiring a billion dollars into an offshore account.
Spearheaded by a morally vacuous leader (Holt McCallany), The Tribe quickly takes over the plane by methodically eliminating all perceived interference. With the body count rising, Ross takes action assisted by another security detail played by Dominic Purcell.
However implausible the plot’s twists and turns, Hijacked is notably hindered by a low budget (sets look like a cheap motel rather than plane interiors) and scant action. The acting is passable (Couture exudes likability) with an original ending.
