Raccoons ruin lives. Nobody knows this better than Jeff Lang (Tobey Maguire), a married doctor who finds himself in a world of trouble that all starts with him trying to rid his backyard of the vermin.

The Details finds Jeff and his wife, Nealy (Elizabeth Banks), 10 years into their marriage with a toddler, living in a peaceful neighborhood but slowly disdaining their union, as their love life becomes nonexistent. Jeff turns to the vixens of Internet chat rooms, where he receives plenty of attention. When he meets up with his friend Rebecca (Kerry Washington) for advice, one thing leads to another once the marijuana and ’90s pop music start flowing.

Before you know it, he’s cheated on his wife. Rebecca’s husband, Peter (Ray Liotta), finds out and demands Jeff call his wife and confess or pay him a large sum of cash to keep quiet. The well-meaning Jeff then cheats on his wife with Lila (Laura Linney), the eccentric cat-loving neighbor, and really begins to see his life fall to pieces.

There’s also a subplot involving Jeff’s basketball buddy, Lincoln (Dennis Haysbert), and his bum kidney. Add to the mix a can of tainted tuna intended to bait and kill those darn raccoons, death by bow and arrow, and a piano — a heavy baby grand — falling from the sky, and you’ve got yourself an engaging, amusing dark comedy.

And to think it all began with an innocent wish to have a nice backyard.

Maguire gives a solid performance, while Liotta is memorable in his minor role. Linney and Washington also hold their own.

Bonus material includes an alternate beginning and an alternate ending that will make you glad the filmmakers opted not to use either of them.
