Films “Super 8”, “Crazy, Stupid, Love” and “The Help” drive Christmas electronic sellthrough

Blu-ray Disc and DVD sales of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 2, Bridesmaids and The Help spearheaded home video sales during the month of December, Amazon reported Dec. 29.

The Seattle-based e-commerce giant said electronic sellthrough of Super 8, The Help and Crazy, Stupid, Love drove Amazon Instant Video revenue through the holidays. Meanwhile, customers purchased more than 4 million Kindles (including Fire and Touch) in December. The Fire tablet is Amazon’s all-time bestselling product during the winter holidays.

Through December, consumers purchased more than 1 million Kindle devices per week, according to Amazon. Christmas Day was the biggest day ever for Kindle book downloads.

The $199 competitor to the Apple iPad features Amazon Instant Video, Amazon Prime streaming and Netflix — the latter two requiring separate subscriptions.

“We are grateful to our customers worldwide for making this the best holiday ever for Kindle,” Amazon founder/CEO Jeff Bezos said in a statement.

Amazon’s robust holiday season underscored the burgeoning popularity of e-commerce in 2011, which saw total sales up 15% to $35.3 billion from Nov. 1 through Dec. 26, according to comScore. Winter sales were driven in part by Cyber Monday (Nov. 28), which generated $2.8 billion in sales, up 16% from 2010.

Indeed, Amazon said it sold enough copies of Walter Isaacson’s biography Steve Jobs during the holidays to create a stack taller than Mt. Everest (29,000 feet above sea level).
