LoveFilm to Stream Fox Movies and TV Shows25 Jun, 2012 By: Erik Gruenwedel
Amazon’s subscription video-on-demand service, LoveFilm Instant, June 25 said it signed a multiyear distribution deal with 20th Century Fox Television Distribution for catalog and new content released in the United Kingdom in the second pay-TV window.
The film deal commences with titles theatrically released in the United Kingdom in 2011, which will be made available to LoveFilm’s subscribers as early as March 2013. LoveFilm Instant is Amazon’s effort to compete with Netflix’s forays into Europe via service in Ireland and the United Kingdom.
Fox will also give LoveFilm members access to current and catalog TV series, beginning in July with previous seasons of motorcycle drama “Sons of Anarchy” and all seasons of “24,” “Prison Break,” “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and its spin-off, “Angel.”
This is the latest in a long line of content deals announced by LoveFilm in the past 12 months, including agreements with Warner Bros., Sony Pictures, NBC Universal, Entertainment One, Studiocanal, Disney, ABC, BBC and ITV.
LoveFilm Instant is available on the PC, Mac or via Sony Playstation 3, Microsoft Xbox 360, Apple iPad and a growing number of Internet-connected TV sets and Blu-ray Disc players.
LoveFilm will continue to rent Fox titles on DVD, Blu-ray and Blu-ray 3D via its LoveFilm by-mail service, which has more than 2 million subscribers.
“This partnership will give LoveFilm members access to the studio’s huge range of recent movies and the opportunity to revisit some of the best American TV series produced in recent years,” said Jim Buckle, managing director of LoveFilm.
