Exclusive deal for zombie series shuts out Netflix’s international subscribers

Lovefilm Instant has secured exclusive access to the hit zombie series, “The Walking Dead” in the United Kingdom, the Amazon-owned subscription video –on-demand service announced.

Season one of the AMC Networks series, which stars British actor Andrew Lincoln as a small-town Georgia sheriff deputy who wakes from a coma to an undead apocalypse and sets off in search of his family, began streaming in the U.K. June 20.

The top-rated U.S. cable series is not available to Netflix’s international subscribers despite the fact the SVOD pioneer has exclusive rights to the show in North America.

“Securing the exclusive streaming rights to “The Walking Dead” is another exciting development for us. It is seriously impressive that the show has become one of the most-watched drama series in U.S. cable history, and a real testament to its quality,” said Chris Bird, director of film strategy at Lovefilm, in a statement.

Separately, Lovefilm launched an updated app on the Xbox 360 to include an improved search function and recommendation engine, optimized user interface, in addition to a Watchlist feature.

The updated app also allows subs to find catalog content easier with a homepage display that keeps track of what is currently being viewed and the last location reached in that video.
