Fox Bows 27 MGM Titles On Demand DVD

23 Mar, 2010 By: Erik Gruenwedel

Seeking to mine incremental revenue from classic Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer movies without incurring costly production runs, 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment March 23 said it is offering consumers 27 studio titles, including TV shows, via Amazon’s DVD-on-demand service, CreateSpace.

Fox joins Universal Studios Home Entertainment and Warner Home Video, among others, which have begun offering select catalog titles available to consumers as special orders as a more cost-effective means of distribution than typical production runs.

Universal and Turner Classic Movies last October partnered to offer film buffs access to classic titles on DVD on a made-to-order basis.

Available at www.amazon.com/mgmcollection, the MGM titles include Academy Award nominees The Best Man (1964), with Lee Tracy garnering a best supporting actor nod; Man of Iron (1981), nominated for best foreign language film; and The Whisperers (1967), for which Edith Evans earned a best actress nomination.

The set also incorporates Golden Globe nominees Garbo Talks (1984), starring Anne Bancroft, and The Glory Guys (1965), featuring James Caan, nominated for most promising newcomer.

The collection also features popular made-for-TV films such as Inherit the Wind (1999), starring Jack Lemmon in his Golden Globe-winning performance; three-time Golden Globe nominee The Tenth Man (1988), starring Anthony Hopkins; and The Two Worlds of Jennie Logan (1979), starring Lindsay Wagner.

The television series to be available soon include the first season of the contemporary show “Flipper: The New Adventures” (1995).

The Web site includes links to pages featuring original movie trailers, for such films as Fitzwilly, The Honey Pot, Hurricane Streets and Valentino, among others.

“The new MGM Limited Edition Collection section will make it even easier for customers to find these film and TV gems on Amazon.com,” said Eric Doctorow, GM of MGM worldwide at Fox.
