Amazon Testing $7.99 Monthly Prime Subscription6 Nov, 2012 By: Erik Gruenwedel
Amazon is quietly testing a $7.99 monthly price point for its Prime membership program offering free two-day shipping on myriad items, in addition to unlimited streaming video of select content.
Amazon Prime, which charges an annual $79 fee ($6.58 monthly) for Amazon Prime, would appear to be testing a higher price point that rivals subscription video-on-demand services Netflix and Hulu Plus.
Amazon recently signed a license deal with Epix to stream its movies concurrently with Netflix for titles such as The Avengers, Iron Man 2, The Hunger Games, Super 8 and Thor, among others. Prime Instant Video now offers more than 30,000 movies and TV episodes.
First disclosed on HackingNetflix.com, the change also includes a free monthly Kindle book rental.
