Retailers Play the 'Game'

The DVD and Blu-ray release of HBO Home Entertainment’s Game of Thrones: The Complete First Season and 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment’s Immortals provided fodder for several retailer exclusives March 6.

For “Game of Thrones,” Best Buy offered two exclusive alternate box art options for the boxed set. Fans could get a separate coaster set for $6.99. Target offered a “Creating the Visual Effects” bonus featurette  with the DVD set.

For Immortals, Best Buy offered exclusive making-of content at BestBuy.com.

Target’s other big exclusive for the week was a free “Beach Fun Barbie” doll (a $7.59 value) with the purchase of the Barbie in A Mermaid Tale 2 DVD at $12.99. Target also offered an $8 savings with the joint purchase of the new Blu-rays of The Lion King 1 1/2 and The Lion King 2 at $24.99 each.

Walmart had a Barbie in A Mermaid Tale 2 DVD packed with a dolphin plush toy for $14.96. The DVD-only version was $12.99.

Other Best Buy exclusives included Blu-ray editions of Wall Street and The Brothers McMullen at $14.99 each.

In total, Best Buy devoted almost seven pages of its 38-page ad circular to packaged media.
