New Titles Hog Shelf Space

7 Dec, 2010 By: John Latchem

The shelf space in the new-release section Dec. 7 was dominated by just three titles, mostly because their studios offered so many versions from which consumers could choose.

Between DVDs, deluxe editions, Blu-rays and combo packs, consumers and stores were hard pressed to keep it all sorted out.

For Inception, some stores had three different versions. All had the single-DVD and Blu-ray/DVD/digital copy combo pack, while Walmart and Best Buy offered a single-disc BD listed as the rental version on Warner’s website. There were four versions of The Twilight Saga: Eclipse (DVD, two-DVD set, Blu-ray and BD/DVD set). But Shrek Forever After took the cake with availability in six different configurations (on its own in DVD, double-DVD pack, Blu-ray and BD/DVD options, and as part of the Shrek: The Whole Story DVD and Blu-ray sets).

Best Buy had a talking package with its Shrek: The Whole Story Blu-ray.

Target took the interesting step of offering the Inception and “Shrek” BD/DVD packs at $17.99, the same price as the single-DVD versions, essentially offering the Blu-ray version for free with purchase of the DVD.

Walmart also debuted its latest DVD-exclusive TV movie, A Walk in My Shoes, at $13, which includes a CD soundtrack.
