Barbie Gets All the Love15 Mar, 2011 By: John Latchem
Three major theatrical releases hit disc March 15, but when it came to promotional deals, all eyes were on Barbie.
The latest direct-to-video animated movie starring the ubiquitous doll, Barbie: A Fairy Secret, was offered for $12 at Target, which offered a free basic fairy doll with purchase of the DVD.
Best Buy offered a $5 discount with the purchase of Barbie: A Fairy Secret and any other “Barbie” DVD. However, this deal was not advertised in Best Buy’s weekly ad circular. Instead, Best Buy’s ads were geared toward the NCAA men’s basketball tournament with deals on purchasing a vast array of HDTVs in time for March Madness.
Walmart didn’t have much in the way of new deals, but for the past few weeks a store in Long Beach, Calif., has had a large endcap display of Magnavox Internet-ready Blu-ray players for $98 each.
Target’s ad circular, on the other hand, devoted a lot of its home entertainment page to a big ad touting the sale of select boxes of candy such as Junior Mints for $1 each, in case anyone wanted to pick up some sweets to go with their movie, music CD or book.
