'Home Media Magazine' Names Ultra HD Alliance the 2016 Home Entertainment Visionary

LOS ANGELES — Home Media Magazine has named the Ultra HD Alliance (UHDA) as this year’s Home Entertainment Visionary.

The UHD Alliance has made a crucial contribution to the future of premium 4K Ultra HD home entertainment, creating specs that will advance and define premium quality in the format.

Home Media Magazine will recognize the UHDA in the Jan. 25 issue with a special feature.

The UHDA was founded in January 2015 by Hollywood studios, consumer electronics manufacturers, and post-production and technology companies to create standards for Ultra HD across all devices. The coalition of companies represents the majority of today’s 4K Ultra HD TV market, developers of enabling technology and the top players in content distribution.

Ultra HD is the next-generation viewing format that features four times the resolution of HD and includes high dynamic range (HDR), which produces brilliant highlights, vibrant colors and greater contrast on compatible displays. The nascent Ultra HD market is expected to grow eightfold by 2019, according to the UHDA.

The UHD Alliance has grown to more than 35 companies to date. The cross-industry organization’s board members include Dolby Laboratories, LG Electronics, Netflix, Panasonic Corp., Samsung Electronics, Sony Corp., Technicolor, The Walt Disney Studio, 20th Century Fox, Universal Pictures and Warner Bros. Entertainment.

Previous Visionary Award recipients include Warren Lieberfarb, Benjamin Feingold, Bob Chapek, Craig Kornblau, Amy Jo Smith, Stephen Einhorn, the Blu-ray Disc Association’s Global Promotions Committee, Eisuke Tsuyuzaki, Tim Baxter, Prasanna Ganesan, Digital HD, and Walmart’s Chris Nagelson and Louis Greth.
