Robot Chicken: Season 4 (DVD Review)8 Dec, 2009 By: John Latchem
$29.98 two-DVD set
You can always count on a “Robot Chicken” DVD to deliver the goods. The fourth season set is absolutely loaded with everything a fan of the show could hope for, starting with 20 more of the sketch-comedy episodes that turn pop-culture upside down.
In particular the show likes to pick apart 1980s cartoons and sci-fi and fantasy movies from all eras. Like co-creator Seth Green is fond of saying, it visualizes what nerds like to talk about behind closed doors.
The fourth season includes the absolutely hilarious 2009 Christmas special, which begins by casting Santa as James Bond from Casino Royale, and leads into a battle for Christmas between Santa and Thor from Marvel Comics.
Other targets include “Transformers,” “G.I. Joe,” The Wizard of Oz, Batman, “The Terminator,” Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (in opera form) and much more.
Bountiful extras take viewers to Australia, where Green and co-creator Matthew Senreich embarked on a media blitz to promote the show, with amusing results. Fans can also relive the 2008 San Diego Comic-Con International and 2009 New York Comic-Con “Robot Chicken” panels.
There also are profiles of the production team, video blogs, audio outtakes and commentaries.
Most interesting is a trove of deleted material, from completed sketches to those that didn’t survive the storyboarding process.
