Top Gun, the 1986 movie that elevated Tom Cruise’s status as a leading man, returns to select Imax 3D theaters for a six-day engagement, starting Feb. 8, 2013.
The theatrical re-release is timed with Paramount Home Media Distribution’s 3D Blu-ray bow of the film as a two-disc set Feb. 19 (order date Jan. 8). Enabled with UltraViolet and including a digital copy, the set’s bonus material includes a six-part documentary on the making of the movie, a behind-the-scenes featurette, interviews with Cruise, filmmaker commentary and more.
Under the guidance of Top Gun director Tony Scott, the iconic film was remastered for the big screen from high-resolution original negative scans and carefully converted to 3D by Legend3D.
The film, which grossed nearly $354 million at the global box office, follows an elite flying school for advanced fighter pilots compete to be best in the class. Cruise stars as Maverick, Val Kilmer as Iceman, Anthony Edwards as Goose, and Kelly McGillis as Charlie, the civilian instructor for whom Maverick develops romantic feelings.
