18 Oct, 2010 By: Erik Gruenwedel

If the controversial officiating and annoying Vuvuzela horns made you question the sport of soccer, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment Nov. 16 will rekindle your passion for the world’s most popular sport thanks to 3D.

The Official 2010 FIFA World Cup Film in 3D will be available on 3D Blu-ray Disc for $39.95. The 64-minute unrated documentary showcases highlights, colors and pageantry of the quadrennial event won this year by Spain (over Holland) in host country South Africa.

The World Cup this year for the first time broadcast select games in 3D, including the opening match between Mexico and South Africa.

Sports is considered an ideal subject matter for 3D as underscored by the launch this year of ESPN 3D and 3D broadcasts of major sports events such as The Masters Golf Championships, 2010 BCS National Championship college football game, and select college basketball games.

Separately, the 3DTV broadcast venture between Sony Corp., Imax and Discovery Channel announced a slate of original (and exclusive) programs to its pending platform.

Original series in 3D include “Abandoned Planet,” a 60-minute program that explores cities and places abandoned by people over time; “Africa in 3D,” which captures the richness and diversity of the world's second-largest continent; “China,” which studies the communist country’s cities, epic vistas and spiritual heartlands; “Jewels of the World,” which showcases natural and cultural gems such as the historic sanctuary of Machu Picchu, Peru, the Temple of Angkor Wat in Cambodia, and the Grand Canyon National Park in the United States, among others.

Exclusive U.S. premieres in 3D include “Attack of the Giant Jellyfish” (Discovery), which explores the myths and realities behind the global explosion of deadly jellyfish, including the giant Nomura, whose strength and size makes them capable of capsizing boats and wreaking havoc on the high seas.

“The Haunted” (Discovery) follows a paranormal team investigating stories of animals and their owners who are experiencing the unexplainable. “Into the Deep 3D” (IMAX) takes audiences on a three-dimensional exploration of the undersea world. In “Magnificent Desolation: Walking on the Moon 3D” (Imax), narrator Tom Hanks takes viewers to the lunar surface to walk alongside the 12 astronauts who have been there.

Other 3DTV broadcast exclusives include the motion picture Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and Monster House (Sony).

“As we work toward launch, we are focused on bringing together a diverse slate of high-quality 3D offerings from both our strategic partners, as well as premier production companies from around the globe,” said Tom Cosgrove, president and CEO of the joint venture.
