RealD announced June 22 that over the past six months it has doubled its installation base of 3-D equipped theater screens worldwide, with more than 3,200 installed and more than 8,700 contracted.

“Doubling our installation footprint worldwide and growing in Europe five-fold in only six months is an extraordinary accomplishment and a testament to the exploding popularity of 3-D cinema among moviegoers,” said Michael V. Lewis, RealD chairman and CEO.

RealD 3-D movies, such as Monsters vs. Aliens and Up, pull in as much as four times the revenue per screen, compared to the same film shown in 2-D, the company said.

“It’s very exciting that we're now beginning to see a significant 3-D rollout into international markets, thanks in large part to RealD’s commitment to making this happen,” said Jeffrey Katzenberg, CEO of DreamWorks Animation.
