NPD: Cost of 3D HDTV a Consumer Concern

3D HDTV may have caused excitement at the International Consumer Electronics Show, but consumers are expressing concern at what one of the new sets may do to their wallets.
A new survey from The NPD Group found that a third of consumers interviewed are interested in a 3D HDTV, but more than 60% expressed concern about both the cost of the TV, and of the 3D content for it. Nearly 40% of consumers also expressed concern regarding the limited 3D content available for the new sets.
“Manufacturers are counting on 3D to accelerate the replacement cycle the way HD did,” said Ross Rubin, executive director of industry analysis for NPD. “Early adopters will look past significant price premiums and limited optimized content in the name of bringing home even more of the cinematic experience as they find 3D capabilities included among other premium features.”
More than half of consumers also reported that wearing glasses was an inconvenience.
The results were taken from the responses of more than 2,000 consumers.
