3D Home Electronics Revenue Tops $55 Million

22 Jun, 2010 By: Erik Gruenwedel

Sales of 3D televisions and compatible Blu-ray Disc players surpassed $55 million in the first 90 days since consumer electronics manufacturers began bowing product for the format in February, according to The NPD Group.

In addition to cost and the dearth of available 3D content, the NPD report cited the need to wear special glasses as an ongoing inhibitor to wider adoption of 3DTV in the home. Priced from $150 a pair, glasses add significant cost and typically work only with that brand of television, according to the report.

Indeed, only 10% of consumers surveyed in The NPD Group’s panelist poll cited “looking silly” as a main concern of wearing the glasses, compared with 41% who cited not having enough glasses on hand for everyone to watch 3D content

“3DTV will [continue to] be a premium home entertainment experience in 2010,” said Ross Rubin, executive director of industry analysis at Port Washington, N.Y.-based NPD. “Many consumers have already shown that they are willing to use special glasses to obtain the 3D effects, but want to preserve the social aspect of the group television viewing [without glasses].”
